Bing Challenge: Day 1

Bing Challenge: Day 1

www.willstrohl.com -- I decided today to give the Bing search engine another try. I had tried it first launched and I wasn’t happy. While the result generally were pretty good, they were not targeted enough, and even when they were, the targeting was inconsistent. I intended to give Bing a full week then, but I only made it 6 of the 7 days. It was enough for me. I resorted back to the infamous Google. It has been a long time, so it’s only fair to try it again. Today is day one, and I will be doing this for 7 days. Her... More... (Technology)

Delete Soft Deleted Users After Deleting Portals

Delete Soft Deleted Users After Deleting Portals

www.willstrohl.com -- I ran into an interesting situation last night. I don’t know why I hadn’t noticed this in the past. My blog site was originally one of many in a single DotNetNuke® installation or instance. Since it has grown in popularity and traffic, I had to move it to it’s own standalone DNN instance. The quickest way to make that happen was to move a copy of the original instance, and delete all of the other portals that came with it. In doing so, this left all of the users from the other portals still in the U... More... (Technology)

How to Start a DotNetNuke User Group

How to Start a DotNetNuke User Group

www.willstrohl.com -- I have blogged about some community things here and there, and I will begin blogging about them more starting right now.  My first meaningful post in this area talked about how to run a user group, and it was more generic in its discussion.  It could apply to any user group.  This time, I am talking about how to start a user group, and I am focusing this discussion on DotNetNuke® user groups specifically. Upgrading DotNetNuke to Use jQuery Version 1.4.2

Upgrading DotNetNuke to Use jQuery Version 1.4.2

www.willstrohl.com -- I didn’t notice it when it happened, but jQuery has had a couple of stabilization releases since the popular 1.4 release. The updates are pretty significant and I have seen performance increases that were noticeable to the eye with several implementations after upgrading. I would highly recommend upgrading your current jQuery core scripts if you’re not running version 1.4.2. Here are some tips for those of you running jQuery in your DotNetNuke® sites. More... Upcoming Webinar for the DotNetNuke Beginner

Upcoming Webinar for the DotNetNuke Beginner

www.willstrohl.com -- I will be presenting a webinar later this month titled, “DotNetNuke® Essentials: Simple Solutions for Building Your Website.” I have been very excited for quite some time to be able to announce this. The webinar will focus on DotNetNuke® from the beginner’s perspective. This is not meant for the module developers, programmers, skinners, etc. This webinar is more focused on your content management and website administrators. However, they need not have had any DNN experience to participate or follow ... More... (Technology)

Coming Soon: DotNetNuke conference Call for Speakers

blog.theaccidentalgeek.com -- We are once again in the heart of the planning season for the DotNetNuke DevConnections and SDC conferences. It is that time of year when we ask all of you to submit your session abstracts for this years DotNetNuke North American conference. Later this week we’ll be opening up the official Call for Speakers on DotNetNuke.com, but I wanted to take the opportunity to give speakers a heads up so they could start preparing their abstracts so that they are ready once we open the submission form. Using the DotNetNuke Source Code

Using the DotNetNuke Source Code

blog.theaccidentalgeek.com -- DotNetNuke recently moved to an Open Repository that is hosted on CodePlex. As Phil Beadle recently noted, the synchronization process is now fully operational and is running nightly to ensure that the CodePlex repository mirrors our internal version control system. Of course, having access to the source code and understanding how to use the source code to get to a working build is two different things. The source code package that we deliver with each release is slightly modified from our own interna... More... (Technology)

Start an embedded YouTube video at a certain timestamp

www.mattcutts.com -- in Google/SEO, Movies/Videos In a previous post I covered how to link to a specific timestamp in a YouTube video. The short version looks like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjDw3azfZWI#t=31m08s The “#t=31m08s” takes you to 31 minutes and 8 seconds in a video. I just found out that you can also start embedded videos at a certain timestamp. To do it on an embedded video, use the “start” parameter. Note that start takes seconds as a parameter, not minutes and seconds. For example, to start an emb... More... (Technology)

Special Report: How Green Certification Programs Address Smoking/Nonsmoking

www.greenlodgingnews.com -- NATIONAL REPORT—In the last several years, the number of green lodging certification programs available to U.S. hotels has exploded with programs emerging at the national, state and city level. For the most part, these programs address indoor air quality by encouraging lodging establishments to avoid the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are often found in paints, glues, cleaning chemicals, furniture and other items. Some even ask if a property has been tested for radon gas. Ironically, most certifi... More... (Lifestyle)

21 Ways Volunteers Can Help with Your Web Site | Engaging Volunteers

blogs.volunteermatch.org -- As any charitable organization knows, volunteers are superstars. They give love and expertise and don’t ask for a dime in return. They can be especially helpful if your organization has a website. Bearing in mind that an entire Web development project is long-term and requires dedicated knowledge and commitment that you’re better off hiring someone to do (upshot: it’s easier to fire someone whose work you’re not happy with), there are still plenty of other tasks you can assign out to people who want to ... Green Hotels and the Triple Bottom Line

Green Hotels and the Triple Bottom Line

www.rezhub.com -- More and more hotel chains and independently owned hotels are becoming more sustainable and more energy efficient due to the rising trend of green lodging and green amenities. More travelers are seeking green hotels, and hotel brands are picking up on this customer preference. Eco-efficiency is what many hotels are focusing on with their green amenities, which is simply the practice of doing more while using less resources. Producing less waste, using less energy, and in turn, producing less pollution... More... (Technology)

Just like Clockwork

Just like Clockwork

blog.theaccidentalgeek.com -- At OpenForce ‘09 we made a lot of announcements about changes to the DotNetNuke project. One change that we announced was a commitment to provide more regular releases. Over the past several years we have always focused on making releases when the software was “ready”. This policy worked well when the project was staffed by volunteers as planning for fixed release dates is extremely difficult when you don’t know from week to week who would be able to work on the project, or how much time they would ha... jQuery for ASP.Net Developers

jQuery for ASP.Net Developers

blog.theaccidentalgeek.com -- This past year I had the pleasure of being asked by Jim Minatel at Wrox to write a Wrox Blox covering the basics of jQuery for ASP.Net Developers. Having co-authored 2 previous books, I realized that writing a book, regardless of the size, is a lot of work, but something that I also find gratifying once you have a finished product. Over the last 2 years, I had gotten more and more into jQuery and really loved its simplicity and power, and thought that this would be a great opportunity to share some of ... More... (Technology)

Monkeying around with jQuery and the DotNetNuke Forums

blog.theaccidentalgeek.com -- I don’t know if any else is like me, but occasionally I will run across something on a website and think that if only I could make some little tweaks to the site, that I might be able to make it more suited to how I think. Maybe it is just a bit of CSS that might clean things up a bit, or maybe if I could just re-arrange things on the page I would have an easier time finding that awesome feature that always seems to get tucked away in a hidden corner of the page, never to be seen again. How to Hard Delete users in DotNetNuke

How to Hard Delete users in DotNetNuke

www.dnndaily.com -- One of the changes to DNN over the past year or so was the way that users were handled when they were deleted. Originally when a user was deleted from DotNetNuke they were hard deleted and completely removed from the database. This would cause problems if you had multiple portals (websites) in your instance of DNN and had users who were shared across those portals. More... (Technology)
